ECOLOGICAL APPROACH TO LEARNING

ECOLOGICAL APPROACH TO LEARNING

The majority of our classes apply the Ecological Approach to learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  This approach is rooted in the idea of creating an environment that fosters natural skill development and problem-solving. Here's how it works:

Dynamic Environment: BJJ training environments are designed to be dynamic and unpredictable, mimicking real-life situations where practitioners must adapt to different opponents, body types, and techniques. This dynamic setting encourages learners to develop a broad range of skills and strategies.

Constraints-Led Approach: Instead of focusing solely on rigid techniques, the ecological approach emphasizes manipulating constraints within the training environment to encourage desired behaviors. For example, practitioners might be given specific objectives or limitations during sparring sessions, forcing them to adapt and refine their techniques.

Non-Linear Learning: Traditional learning often follows a linear progression, where practitioners are taught techniques in a predetermined order. In contrast, the ecological approach recognizes that learning in BJJ is non-linear, with practitioners acquiring skills through experimentation, trial and error, and exploration of different possibilities.

Self-Organization: Practitioners are encouraged to use their movements and techniques based on their individual strengths, body types, and preferences. This allows for more personalized development and allows learners to find solutions that work best for them.

Emphasis on Feedback: Feedback plays a crucial role in the ecological approach to learning BJJ. Coaches and training partners provide feedback that is specific and relevant to the practitioner's goals, helping them refine their techniques and decision-making skills.

Adaptability and Creativity: BJJ is a dynamic martial art that requires practitioners to adapt to changing situations. The ecological approach fosters adaptability by exposing practitioners to a variety of scenarios and encouraging creative problem-solving.

The ecological approach to learning in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes creating a rich and challenging training environment that promotes adaptive, creative, and effective grappling skills. It's about more than just memorizing techniques; it's about developing a deep understanding of the principles underlying those techniques and applying them in real-world situations.
